1. Facebook

Facebook launched in February 2004 and is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of July 2010 Facebook has more than 500 million active users, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world.

Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics.
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

2.  Twitter

Twitter is owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and micro blogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called "tweets". Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets-this is known as "following" and subscribers are known as "followers". As of late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of just following individual authors. While the service is free, accessing it through SMS (Short Message Service) may incur phone service provider fees. The website is based in San Bruno, California near San Francisco (where the website was first based). Twitter also has servers and offices in San Antonio, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.

3.  Myspace

Founded by its current President Thomas "Tom" Anderson and Chris DeWolfe. Myspace is an online social networking service, allowing users to share messages, interests and photos with a growing body of friends. Users can send emails, post videos, listen to music, and write blogs; the site also includes classified ads and posting of events. Also it is currently STILL one of the top ten social networking sites even if Facebook kinda took over (no offense myspace). Myspace still has over 60 million users so its not out of the race yet, plus I heard there supposed to be doing something really big soon, changing the logo and everything, so we'll see....

4.  LinkedIn

This social networking site is tailored more for professionals but with its friendly environment, uniqie monthly visotors, and overall apperance it made my top 5 list. LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003 by creator Reid Hoffman, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of 9 August 2010 (2010 -08-09), LinkedIn had more than 75 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide (that's pretty impressive)...The site is available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. 5.  GooglePlus

Google+ (pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus, sometimes abbreviated as G+) is a social networking and identity service,operated by Google Inc.

Google+ integrates social services such as Google Profiles and Google Buzz, and introduces new services Circles, Hangouts, Sparks, and Huddles. Google+ is available as a web site, and will be available as a desktop application,and is already available as a mobile application, but only on the Android and iOS operating systems. Sources such as The New York Times have declared it Google's biggest attempt to rival the social network Facebook, which had over 750 million users in 2011.
